Ganga Dussehra 2026: The Holy Dip, the Das-Daan Samagri & the Ghats of Varanasi, Haridwar and Prayagraj

Ganga Dussehra — the descent of Ganga, the holy dip and the deep daan

Ganga Dussehra marks the day Ganga descended from heaven to earth — which is why it is also called Gangavataran. It falls on the dashami (tenth day) of the waxing moon in Jyeshtha, at the height of summer.

This guide covers the vidhi for the holy dip and deep daan, the full list of the ten das-daan offerings, and the traditions at the ghats of Varanasi, Haridwar, Prayagraj and Patna — plus how to observe the day at home with Ganga jal.

Ganga Dussehra 2026: the date and the legend of Ganga's descent

Ganga Dussehra falls on the dashami of the waxing moon in Jyeshtha, so the Gregorian date shifts each year — usually between late May and mid-June.

The legend: King Bhagiratha performed severe penance to bring Ganga down to earth and free his ancestors' ashes. To break the force of her descent, Lord Shiva received her in his matted hair, and so Ganga came to earth. Bhagiratha is remembered as the symbol of "bhagirath prayatna" — relentless effort.

  • Ganga Dussehra = Jyeshtha Shukla Dashami (Gangavataran)
  • Legend: Bhagiratha's penance, Shiva's hair, Ganga's descent to earth
  • The holy dip, deep daan and das-daan carry special importance on this day

The vidhi for the holy dip and deep daan

The ritual is simple but the order matters: take a sankalp before bathing, then after the bath offer water, flowers, a lamp and naivedya to Ganga ji, and then do deep daan. Deep daan means floating a lit clay lamp — with ghee or sesame oil — on the water.

Many devotees perform deep daan in the name of their ancestors. It symbolises light moving forward and darkness left behind.

  • Sankalp — invoking Ganga ji before bathing
  • Ganga snan — the dip, with the recitation of "Gange cha Yamune cha"
  • Ganga pujan — worship with water, flowers, akshat, lamps and naivedya
  • Deep daan — floating a lit lamp on the water
  • Tarpan — offering water in memory of the ancestors
  • Das-daan — the ten offerings listed below

Das-daan: the ten things given away on Ganga Dussehra

Ganga Dussehra is also called Dashahara, and one reading of the name is "the removal of ten sins". Hence the tradition of giving ten things — all of them tied to the Jyeshtha heat, meaning the things most needed in that season.

The offering is given to someone who needs it, not to a receptacle — that is the heart of the tradition.

  • Jaggery (gud) — for the body's energy
  • Sattu (roasted gram flour) — cooling in the heat
  • Sesame (black til) — used in both daan and tarpan
  • Rice and dal — grain
  • A raw clay pitcher (kachcha ghada) and a water vessel — to quench thirst
  • An umbrella (chhata) — protection from the sun
  • A hand fan (pankha) — relief in the heat
  • Cloth (vastr)
  • Footwear (joote-chappal) — protection for the feet
  • Sugarcane, melon and watermelon — seasonal fruit

Varanasi: Dashashwamedh, Assi and Panchganga Ghat

In Kashi, Ganga Dussehra is poured onto every ghat in the city. At Dashashwamedh, Assi, Panchganga and Kedar Ghat, bathing and deep daan begin at dawn, and the evening Ganga Aarti is especially grand that day.

In Kashi, lamps are also floated from boats — hundreds of diyas drifting on the water. Panchganga Ghat takes its name from the meeting of five rivers and is counted among the holiest ghats for bathing.

  • Varanasi: Dashashwamedh, Assi, Panchganga, Kedar Ghat — bathing in the morning, deep daan in the evening
  • Deep daan from a boat — Kashi's most recognisable tradition
  • The evening Ganga Aarti — especially elaborate on Ganga Dussehra

Haridwar, Prayagraj, Patna and the other Ganga towns

In Haridwar, bathing at Har Ki Pauri (Brahma Kund) carries special merit — it is believed Ganga descended to earth here. In Prayagraj, the bathing and tarpan happen at the Triveni Sangam, where the Ganga, Yamuna and the mythical Saraswati meet, considered especially fruitful on Ganga Dussehra.

In Patna the Ganga ghats — Collectorate Ghat, Digha Ghat, Kali Ghat — observe the day, as do the ghats at Kanpur, Munger, Bhagalpur and Rishikesh's Triveni Ghat.

  • Haridwar: Har Ki Pauri (Brahma Kund) — the foremost bathing site
  • Prayagraj: Triveni Sangam — bathing, tarpan and daan
  • Patna: Collectorate, Digha and Kali Ghat
  • Rishikesh: Triveni Ghat; Kanpur: the ghats by the Ganga Barrage
  • Munger and Bhagalpur: the ancient ghats on the Ganga
  • Kolkata: bathing and deep daan on the Hooghly ghats

Ganga Dussehra at home: worshipping with Ganga jal

If reaching the Ganga is not possible, the puja is done with Ganga jal at home. Take Ganga jal in a clean copper or clay vessel, add a little raw milk, flowers and akshat, take your sankalp, and then light a lamp and worship.

To do deep daan at home, fill a large vessel or tub with water and float the lit lamp in it — the intent is what carries. For the das-daan, give sattu, jaggery, sesame, rice and dal, an umbrella, a fan and cloth to someone who needs them; this is the most practical part of the tradition.

Keeping the Ganga clean is part of the festival: do not use soap or shampoo while bathing, do not leave plastic or thermocol lamps in the water, and offer a few loose flowers instead of a garland.
