Puja Samagri — Complete Samagri List for Every Puja

Every pooja needs a few basic items — kalash (pot), Gangajal (holy water), roli, chandan (sandalwood), akshat, haldi, kumkum, diya, ghee, agarbatti, dhoop, coconut, flowers (rose/marigold), mauli (sacred thread), janeu, betel leaves, a thali and a bell. Our checklists include these basics plus puja-specific samagri, with quantities.

Puja samagri falls into 5 groups — main items (idol/photo, kalash, coconut), flowers & leaves (marigold, rose, mango leaves, durva grass), fruits, sweets & prasad, puja equipment (thali, bell, shankh, diyas) and special samagri (e.g. Kuber puja items for Diwali). For Navratri puja you need kalash for ghatasthapana, barley (jau), an earthen diya for akhand jyoti, Durga Saptashati book, red cloth, kumkum, gulal, 9 types of flowers and fruits, havan samagri and kanya pujan items. Keep roli, chandan, akshat, haldi, kumkum, Gangajal, flowers, a diya, a small bowl of ghee/oil, agarbatti, dhoop, mithai/prasad, coconut and betel leaves in your pooja thali. Tie a mauli on the thali. A bronze or brass thali is considered most auspicious.

To make a pooja kit, keep these items together in one box — kalash, thali, diyas (2–5), ghee, agarbatti, dhoop, roli, chandan, akshat, haldi, kumkum, mauli, bell, shankh, coconut, betel leaves and offering coins. First clean the puja space and lay an asan. Place the idol/photo at a height, thali in front, diya and agarbatti to the right, water and flowers to the left, prasad in front. Place the kalash in the center or right side. Every item on our checklist shows where to buy it, so shopping stays organized too.

Some special items not used in every puja — durva grass and modak for Ganesh puja, belpatra and datura for Shiva puja, jhula and makhan-mishri for Janmashtami, barley and akhand jyoti for Navratri, panchamrit and sohalhar prasad for Satyanarayan Katha, and silver nag-nagin for Kaal Sarp Dosh puja.

Four things are required — (1) samagri: kalash, diyas, flowers, prasad etc. (see our checklists), (2) space: a clean puja room or mandir, (3) time: an auspicious muhurat as per the panchang, and (4) shraddha: bathe, wear clean clothes and do the puja with full devotion.
