Importance of This Puja

Shraddha/Pitru Puja holds a special place in Indian tradition. Dedicated to ancestors, it is performed on the occasion of Pitru Paksha. It is believed to bring happiness, prosperity and positive energy into the home. According to the scriptures, a puja yields its full fruit only when all the samagri is pure and complete. The occasion falls on पितृ पक्ष. Families perform it together, fostering unity and faith in the household.

Puja Procedure in Brief

First clean the house and the puja area, and lay out an asana. Establish the kalash, bathe the idol or image of ancestors and offer vastra. Perform abhishek with gangajal, then offer chandan, roli, kumkum and akshat. For naivedya, offer fruits, sweets and काले तिल, जौ और ब्राह्मण भोजन. Light incense and dhoop, place ghee lamps, and perform the aarti. Finally, distribute prasad and give dakshina. For the complete vidhi, always follow your family tradition or the guidance of your local priest.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Not to Do

  • Do not keep any samagri in an unclean place — clean everything before the puja.
  • Do not offer stale or used fruits and sweets as prasad.
  • Avoid last-minute shopping — essential items often sell out on festival days.
  • Do not buy too few cotton wicks, camphor and ghee — running out mid-puja interrupts the ritual.
  • Do not waste the coconut, fruits and prasad afterwards — share it with family or those in need.
