Ganesh Chaturthi 2026: Puja Samagri, Vidhi & Sthapana Guide

Ganesh Chaturthi 2026 falls on 14 September (Monday). On this day Ganesh ji is installed in homes and pandals, worshipped for 1.5, 3, 5, 7 or 10 days, and then immersed (visarjan).
The Ganesh puja samagri list is a long one — especially the 21 leaves, 21 flowers and modaks. This guide covers everything from sthapana to visarjan.
Sthapana samagri
For the sthapana you will need: an idol or photo of Ganesh ji, a chowki with red cloth, mango leaves or a toran of flowers, rangoli, diyas, coconut, mauli, kalash and a flower mala. Choose the idol according to your home — smaller idols are much easier to immerse at home.

Puja samagri — the tradition of 21
Ganesh ji is especially fond of 21 leaves and 21 flowers; among the 21 leaves, durva (doob grass) is the most essential. You will also need: kumkum, haldi, akshat, chandan, a ghee diya, dhoop, camphor, agarbatti, coconut, dry fruits and sweets. The complete list with quantities and estimated prices is ready in our Ganesh puja samagri list — gather everything a day or two before the puja.
Modak and bhog
Modak is the most beloved offering to Ganesh ji — a bhog of 21 modaks is considered auspicious. You can also add laddus, peda or homemade sweets. Offer fruits (banana, pomegranate and amla are special) and panchamrit too. If you cannot make modaks at home, order them from a sweet shop well in advance — they are hard to find on Chaturthi day.
Puja vidhi — in short
- After a bath, install Ganesh ji in the shubh muhurat (midday is considered most auspicious)
- Place the idol on a chowki with red cloth and draw a rangoli
- Set up the kalash, then invoke Ganesh ji and perform pran-pratishtha
- Offer kumkum, chandan, akshat, flowers and 21 durva
- Worship the 21 leaves, offering each one by name
- Serve the modak and sweet bhog, perform the aarti and distribute prasad
Preparing for visarjan
The grand visarjan takes place on Anant Chaturdashi (23 September 2026). You will again need flowers, akshat, camphor and sweets. Choose a clay idol instead of plaster of Paris, and immerse it in a bucket or natural water body — care for nature along with the festival.
Keep track of the expenses
Idol, samagri, sweets and decorations add up quickly. Estimate everything in advance with the budget calculator, and buy everything except fresh items like flowers and durva beforehand — the shops are extremely crowded on Chaturthi day.
