Durga Puja 2026 Complete Guide: Pandals, Bhog, Sandhi Puja & City-Wise Celebrations

Grand Durga Puja 2026 pandal with the decorated Maa Durga idol

Durga Puja is far more than a ritual — it is a grand festival of devotion, art, music, food and community. In 2026 the main days run from 17 to 21 October, opening with Mahalaya (10 October) and closing with the idol immersion on Vijaya Dashami (21 October).

This guide goes beyond history to what people actually search for — the timing of Sandhi Puja, the bhoger khichuri recipe, the idols of Kumartuli, the famous pandals of Kolkata, and how and where Durga Puja is celebrated in your own city: Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Pune, Hyderabad and Guwahati.

Sandhi Puja — the holiest moment of Durga Puja

Sandhi Puja falls at the junction of the last 24 minutes of Ashtami and the first 24 minutes of Navami (48 minutes in all) — in 2026 this is on 19 October. Tradition holds the Goddess slew Chanda and Munda at this very moment; 108 lamps are lit and 108 lotuses offered.

The exact Sandhi timing depends on each city's sunrise and tithi end, so check your city's time with our Muhurat Finder — it shows the shubh muhurat, rahukaal and full panchang.

Mahalaya to Visarjan — the day-by-day rituals

On Shashthi the Goddess is awakened (bodhan) under a bel tree and the idol's eyes are painted (chakkhu daan). On Saptami morning the Nabapatrika — a bundle of nine plants — is bathed in a river and installed as a symbol of the Goddess.

Ashtami is the holiest day — young girls are worshipped as the Goddess in Kumari Puja, devotees offer pushpanjali, and the evening brings the dhunuchi dance, where devotees dance to the beat of the dhak holding smoking incense pots.

On Vijaya Dashami married women play sindoor khela and the idols are carried in procession for immersion, with the cry of "Asche bochor abar hobe" (it will happen again next year).

Durga Puja bhog and the bhoger khichuri recipe

Bhog is the soul of Durga Puja — sattvic prasad cooked without onion or garlic. The classic spread is bhoger khichuri, labra (mixed vegetables), beguni, chutney, payesh (kheer) and sweets.

A simple bhoger khichuri: rinse and soak 1 cup gobindobhog/basmati rice with ½ cup roasted moong dal. Heat ghee, temper with bay leaf, cumin, ginger and whole garam masala, then roast the rice and dal. Add turmeric, salt and a little sugar, cook in 4 cups water, finish with ghee and serve with potato and cauliflower.

Pandals, Kumartuli and the famous pujas of Kolkata

Kumartuli, a north Kolkata neighbourhood, is where artisans sculpt Maa Durga idols from Ganga clay — idols shipped from here reach pujas across the world. Modern Durga Puja is famous for theme-based pandals, each a walk-through work of art.

Kolkata's most famous pandals include Sreebhumi (a grand new theme each year), Ekdalia Evergreen, Bagbazar Sarbojanin (the traditional ek-chala idol), Mudiali, College Square (with its lake reflection) and Santosh Mitra Square. Pandal-hopping is most beautiful at night — the Metro is the fastest way around.

The economics and tourism of Durga Puja

Durga Puja is a pillar of West Bengal's economy — its estimated impact runs into thousands of crores of rupees, driving retail, clothing, idol-making, lighting, food, hotels and tourism. UNESCO's 2021 Intangible Cultural Heritage tag has further boosted international interest.

During the puja days, footfall in Kolkata rises sharply and thousands of artisans and performers find seasonal work.
